Hi everyone and welcome to the Youth committee of MUNHigh 2020
I’m your head chair, Ela Agaoglu, and I am really looking forward to a weekend full of high-quality debate about three critical issues affecting young people across the world. Our first issue “The Issue of the Exploitation of Children Online” discusses the growing possibility of exploitation that has come with the technological innovation in recent decades. Efforts to combat such problems often require a multi-stakeholder approach and cultural variations and differences in legal systems can further complicate effective prevention and investigations. The European Union offers three categories to explain forms of behaviour related to ICT-facilitated child abuse and exploitation: online harm from content, from contact and from conduct.
“The Issue of the Exploitation of Young People in Conflict Zones” explores the specific reasons for child recruitment and the many dangers faced by children in all types of conflict. The United Nations monitors violations against children and in 2016 alone, the United Nations verified over 20,000 incidents of such violations (but we must assume these numbers to be much higher as we are not able to document every case due to access restrictions and security threats). The issue also covers the need for steps to be taken to assist children in the aftermath of their involvement in the armed conflict as they are often subject to major trauma to their physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Finally, “The Issue of Child Marriage” is a reality for both boys and girls, although girls are disproportionately the most affected. There are more than 700 million women who marry before they turn 18, and more than 250 million of them marry before 15. In the majority of cases, this brings several other critical problems such as a lack of access to education, domestic violence, an increased likelihood of dying when giving birth and higher chances of a stillbirth to name a few. Without far more intensive and sustained action now from all parts of society, hundreds of millions more girls will suffer profound, permanent, and utterly unnecessary harm.
