Hi everyone, and welcome to the youth committee! This is the second MUNHIGH with the youth committee and with this year’s theme of humanity, debating topics directly related to youth is crucial. After all, the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow!
For MUNHIGH21, we will be debating two very pertinent topics, with the first being youth recruitment into organised crime groups. This issue is more prevalent than is often thought with thousands of children and young people being criminally exploited worldwide. However, there seems to be a focus on supporting children after they have been exploited and while this is important, perhaps equally important is preventing the exploitation in the first place? Can the recruitment of children be prevented and what is the UN’s role in ensuring this takes place in every member state?
The other topic is the issue of period poverty, a very current issue after Scotland became the first country in the world to make period products free. This was an excellent step to ending period poverty but is this option viable for all member states and is it the UN’s role to provide the resources for this? In addition to eradicate period poverty, the stigma around menstruation that exists across all cultures globally must be broken also. How can we work towards a world where periods and menstrual hygiene are not taboo and looked down upon?
It is now up to you to come up with steps we can take to becoming closer to resolving these issues. I look forward to the plentiful and fruitful debate that I’m sure we’ll have on the day and hope you will enjoy being in the youth committee. See you all soon!
