future
The Head Chair for the Future Committee is Sajida Rahman
Welcome to MUNHIGH 22 Future Committee. This committee is here to solve issues that are becoming more imminent by the minute.
In our current economic system, we are having constant economic crises - international and national - with our latest one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And before our current recession, we had the Financial Crash of 2007-2008. With this crash came 7 months of global protest from the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement, requesting for governments and the UN to advance social and economic justice and new forms of democracy. Each time millions lose their jobs, national and inter-continental debts increase and wealth disparity. We must implement protocols to reduce the effects of these regular crises and ideally eradicate them.
We are also debating the issues of automation and robots in the workplace which is adding to the issue of unemployment and income inequality. The new use of automation is a pressing matter and we hope to come up with resolutions tackling the root of the means of production being automated and what it will mean for workers globally.
The last issue is stabilising the Middle East, again. As the US has withdrawn their troops from Afghanistan after 20 years, we are left with the question on what the best way forward is for Afghan citizens. After the military presence in several countries, we see time and time again they are left with power vacuums which are taken advantage of by extremist groups. Many countries, specifically those in the Middle East, are facing these same issues. We can learn from what has happened previously and implement strategies to stabilise countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran - to name a few - and protect citizens and their human rights.
I hope that you enjoy researching these complex issues and participating in lively, fruitful debate!
